Founded on March 31, 1782, Mission San Buenaventura is ninth in the mission chain, last to be founded during Father Serra’s lifetime and one of six he personally dedicated. The mission was constructed as part of the Santa Barbara Channel section, which included missions at Santa Barbara and La Purísima, and El Presidio in Santa Barbara.

Saint Bonaventure was born in 1221 in Italy. He is the patron saint of San Buenaventura Mission (translated in English Saint Bonaventure) and also the City of Ventura, CA. He was an Italian medieval Franciscan, scholastic theologian, and philosopher. As a young child, Bonaventure was cured of a fatal illness through prayers to Saint Francis of Assisi. After joining the Franciscans and rigorously studying theology and philosophy, Bonaventure became a professor of theology. He wrote extensively on philosophy and theology, but also defended his order and played an integral role in meaningfully explaining the essence and purpose of the lives of the Franciscans. His feast day is July 15th.

He is the patron of diseases of the bowels, the San Buenaventura Mission, and Ventura, CA.
