Symbolism: Bees are a symbol of tireless activity, regal power, and chastity.
St. Rita is often depicted with bees in iconography due to an event where a swarm of white bees surrounded her on her Baptism day, some even in her mouth, yet she remained unharmed. After all these centuries, a swarm of bees still exists in the convent in a wall near St. Rita's grave. Their color is not white, but that of the common bee, and they do not have stingers. They live retired during the year, only coming out in the last few days of Holy Week and then returning once again for the Feast of St. Rita.

The bee is more honored than other animals, not because she labors, but because she labors for others” - Saint John Chrysostom
