St. Januarius, or San Gennaro in Italian, is a martyr and saint of the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. He was bishop of Benevento in the third century, and his bones and blood are preserved in the Naples cathedral as relics. He is believed to have been martyred during the Christian persecution of Emperor Diocletian. His feast day is September 19th.
Januarius is the patron saint of Naples, where the faithful gather three times a year in Naples Cathedral to witness the liquefaction of what is claimed to be a sample of his blood kept in a sealed glass ampoule. He is also the patron of blood disorders, blood clots, blood banks, phlebotomy, volcanic eruptions; invoked against the evil eye.
The body of St Januarius is preserved in Naples, where he is honored as the city's principal patron. The Neapolitan's pray to him for protection from fires, earthquakes, plagues, droughts and the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. In every emergency St Januarius is their powerful champion and universal helper.
